Lifelong learner

1. After graduated from NUS, I joined Philips Singapore Pte Ltd in 1984. I was trained locally for 9 months on the job to be a TV circuit designer. After the training course, I joined the Engineering Department and worked as a TV set Test System Designer.

The experiences I gained from working at Philips Singapore Pte Lte (Video Factory).

1.1 The 9 months course proved to be a powerful course without exams, this course trained us in a realistic working environment. The course materials and training methods are authentic (according to the situated learning theory). It also helped me to do networking with my course mates (they are my NUS classmates).

1.2 The 2 years working at the Philips Singapore Pte Ltd pushed me to pick up a lot of practical skills and knowledge which I had not learnt in my NUS course. The production floor problems I need to solve trained me to look at problems in a practical way and to learn to work with other colleagues as a team.

1.3 The new knowledge (not taught at NUS) I had learnt at Philips Singapore Pte Ltd are:

1.3.1 How to design automatic test equipment (ATE)

1.3.2 How to design switch-mode power supply

1.3.3 How an analog  TV circuit works

1.3.4 How to deal with interference problems in an industrial environment.

1.3.5 How to test high frequency circuit.
